Great article Chuck. Honest and practical advice. There's enough BS hyped training going on out there that is harmful to the student...your article is sound advice for personal safety. Thanks for posting this : )

I do agree about needing to either watch or join in at least one class before joining a school. There are loads of places that just want to sign you up for a monthly memberships fee, and then it is only after you have signed a contract to pay for 6 months or a year that you find out that the people who run it are very good at business and sales, but know very little about martial arts. I had this with a kung fu class once and it really annoyed me.

Sam,

You are correct. While you can correct your flaws and mistakes in a technique, it can be difficult unless you know what you should be looking for. Where as in forms, when you practice them there is NO stress (someone attacking you, or worrying about distance or timing). So if you can't perform your forms properly under zero stress, your errors will be easier to see, and you will be able to diagnose your errors easier.

Dear Chuck,
I questions concerning unarmed forms & unarmed techniques in martial arts & the differences between them it has been said it is easy hide or cover up your flaws & mistakes in techinques, but with forms you can't like if your punches & kicks are sloppy or balance is poor, the forms make them clear. Is this true?

These are modern times. The success of martial arts schools also rests on its ability to survive financially. Every school has a responsibility to the community. Good public relations is one of them. Arrogance of instructors or his/her students (similar to that one in the Karate Kid movie) should not be tolerated. Leave and tell everyone you know about the club! This is the age of eMail and the internet!
