I always find it interesting that every once and a while, someone has the idea that what you can do in the movies will work in real life, under a very bad situation. Don’t get me wrong, I love action movies as much as the next guy. And I’ve seen some great ‘Movie Fu’ (as I call it). But we need to understand that a choreographed fight scene is totally different from the chaotic events of real life.
To think that you can keep blocking and a guy won’t hit you, and then you can place that one ‘killer punch’ to stop him, well….I’ve yet to see it happen (in real life, UFC, competitions, etc). What usually happens is you can block the first couple, but after that they usually start connecting with their intended target.
In short, most violent altercation are messy, chaotic, and over really really quickly (if you’re lucky). With the principles of balance, coordination, distance, and angling helping you out. There are not “he punches once, and I get to do 5 more moves.” The only two ways you get 5 more moves, (1) is if he’s been completely compromised (no balance, coordination, and his angling is way out), or (2) this guy is way, under your league.
One thing that I love in the great classic Kung Fu flicks, is the hard training, focus, and determination they show it takes to become good at martial arts (or anything else in life for that fact).
So for all those looking for the magic kung fu pill, or 5 day, just add water Kung Fu master or Even better the Matrix – get jacked in and say, ‘I know Kung Fu’. Do yourself a reality check, it will take some real hard work, to become good, and if you’re serious about training, it will take a lifetime of dedication to become a real ‘master’ of martial arts. But if any of you find that ‘magic kung fu pill’ please let me know, I’ll take two.
